This civic engagement project centered on starting a club on campus—the World Awareness Club (WAC)—with a unique focus on issues unknown to our peers or not widely covered by the media. To jump start the club, they organized an art show and auction to raise awareness on global hunger and raise money for Action Against Hunger–an organization that focuses on ending world hunger and, specifically, child malnutrition by providing clean water and sustainable food solutions. They displayed art from student and local artists who would not otherwise get much exposure. Although we did not raise a lot of money, we took the first step as a campus organization, which allowed us to organize many future events, such as Oxfam Hunger Banquets and poverty photo campaigns, in the following years. The student who started this club was a freshman at the time, and he continued to work on it until he graduated!
