ComoZoo logoSkye  wanted to raise money to donate to the Como Zoo. Well-funded zoos are the best zoos. They can bring joy to anyone who visits them, and many people have fond memories of visiting their zoo as a small child. However, if a zoo does not have enough money, the odds are that the animals will live in less than ideal conditions. There is likely to be more crowding in enclosures, and some zoos will even take the money they need from the funds for animals’ food, resulting in malnutrition of the animals. Skye wanted to make sure that didn’t happen to the Como Zoo.

So, she decided to paint pictures, sell them, and give all the funds to the Como Zoo.

Skye painted four to six pictures in her free time each week for three weeks. She also informed family members about the importance zoos have on the community, and how a well funded zoo helps maintain the proper care and nourishment the animals in captivity deserve.

She then displayed pictures of her paintings on Twitter and Facebook, asking if people wanted to buy them to help raise money to donate to the Como Zoo.

She sold 15 paintings, raising $240 for the Como Zoo.

“When animals are in captivity they are completely dependent on human care to stay healthy and happy, and by having zoos we as humans are accepting that responsibility. Under-funding in zoos can cause horrible repercussions. … Where zoos can fall short is when we only use the animals as a mere means for our own human entertainment. We need to recognize that animals, too, deserve our respect, which means that when they are in captivity, we need to be able to provide them with the proper care they need.” – Skye
