The goal of this project was to underserved local youth make and design games (e.g., video games or card games), ultimately reducing the digital divide pixel by pixel. The two students working on this project, a) spread the word about Pixel Arts, a local non-profit, through a forum and recruited students to volunteer for them, b) raised for Pixel Arts funds by organizing a game tournament, c) collected art supplies and technology (including an X-Box 360), and d) initiating an after-school programs at local schools.
This project embraced safe and fun environments for playing and for learning: achievement motivation, self-efficacy, and meta-awareness. Thereby, this project was a community-driven effort to inspire growth, creativity, and hope for both adult mentors and youth participants through creative means: games.
