Emma held a book drive to collect books to take to her local middle school. As part of her collection, Emma hit a roadblock: she realized that the books that she was receiving for donations weren’t age appropriate for middle-schoolers. She then decided to buy books from “Goodwill” to donate instead of receiving solely books that were donated. The total amount of books donated were two hundred and the total amount of book marks were around one hundred.

Emma was struck by an article she read in class: “Ten Ways to Make a Difference” by Peter singer. Step 3 was to always try to design an achieveable goal. Emma felt that this book drive was something anyone can do. Emma writes, “I actually had a group of girls come up and ask me to do something like it again and telling me how exciting it was for them and they want to do a book drive or a book swap because of me and want me involved again, so if anything I made a difference for those few girls which is a start and maybe could move in to something bigger hopefully. I want to continue making a difference even if it is something small like this and I think the article about making a difference can really be an actually helpful tool for me if I want to continue on and try to make something even bigger.”
