Typically, Latino college students show a low perseverance in their college career. The percentage of 2011 college graduates is significantly lower in Latino students with 10.3 in contrast with 89.7 of Non-Hispanics ( (U. S Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). Likewise, at community college the percent of students of color is 20.8% (Minnesota Management and Budget, 2014). For Monica’s Civic Engagement project, she wanted to do something to increase the percentage of Latino students who graduate from HTC-Brooklyn Park Campus. To do this, she wanted to create more financial aid opportunities for Latino students and to participate in the Latino Club on campus. Monica writes,

“I’m glad I chose this project because I am getting more involved with the Ecuadorian community; I am informing my Latino friends about educational and cultural meetings and events supported by CLUES (Communidades Latinas Unidas al Servicio or Latino Communities United in Service) and theMinnesotaDepartment of Education and Consulate of Ecuador. Also, I am forming groups with Latino friends and planning to celebrate national holidays from different Latin American countries.”
