For William’s Organize An Activity, he wanted to find a way to give support and show his appreciation to the American troops who have been deployed overseas. As a veteran himself, he understood how important this could be for our troops. He contacted other schools and asked them to help him write letters and collect care packages to send to the troops. William said, “I chose this project because I understand that they miss home and that a care package from anyone lets them know that we care about them and that they are not forgotten.” Overall three schools participated in this activity and several students from these schools wrote letters and helped pack the care packages.
When discussing his project, William related his experience to something he had learned in ethics. He said, “The Organize an Activity assignment was very good for me to do; mainly because I have never done something like this before and now, knowing that with a few hours of effort, it is surprisingly simple to get others to help others you want to help.” William was surprised by how easy it was to get others to help him with this project. He was inspired by the schools who participated and the USO who payed for the shipping of the care packages. He was reminded of a video he watched in Ethics class–First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy. He remarked that while the leader was important, without followers, “the leader would look like a complete idiot.” William realized that his partnerships with others enabled him to successfully complete this project.
