Our civic engagement project, Excitement for Education, aimed to expose students in the community to a college campus and increase the likelihood these students will go to college. Another goal was to determine and address misconceptions among students about college life and financial limitations that make them wary of applying to college.
We gave a tour to fifty 3rd, 4th and 5th graders from Reedville Elementary in Hillsboro. Each group member lead 16 to 17 students around the campus. We showed the students academic buildings, classrooms, the University Center and had lunch with them. We answered their questions about college and student life and showed them that a college campus is an exciting place to be at.
