For this group’s Organize an Activity, they decided to host a bake sale at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. Several different types of treats were prepared in advance, packaged and priced at $1 per treat. All of the ingredients that were used to make the treats were donated by the members of the group and all of the proceeds went to Project Healthy Children (PHC), an organization listed on Peter Singer’s website, The Life You Can Save. When addressing the process of choosing their activity a group member wrote, “At first it was a bit difficult to try and organize an activity. Our group had an issue of meeting up so we decided to do a project that could split the responsibilities.” By splitting up the work equally to avoid the struggle of finding times to meet as a group, they were able to successfully host the bake sale and raised a total of $231.39 within 4 hours.
When discussing their reasons for choosing to donate the proceeds to PHC, a member of the group said, “When we chose Project Healthy Children we knew it would be a great place to donate because it would help a lot of children who need vitamins and nutrients to stay healthy. Peter Singer, being a utilitarian, believes in doing the greatest good for the greatest number in the long term, which means the charity we donated to is doing the most good for the children it helps. Not only is the money we donated helping children right now but it will also help them in the future to grow and maintain good health throughout their lives”.
