Laurie wanted to do something to help those with breast cancer, to raise awareness about the cause, and to get her community involved. For her Civic Engagement project, she envisioned coordinating a group of like minded folks to crochet hats for breast cancer patients. Although her project didn’t turn out exactly as she planned, Laurie was still able to learn to crochet and make her own hats to donate.
I believe there are others out in this world, like me, walking around silently having a desire or passion for doing something for the greater good but not knowing where to begin or how to do it. You provided the road map! It was just up to us as students to navigate. This project also taught me:
- Perseverance-Do not give up. If you run into a brick wall, move around it and proceed forward.
- One person does make a difference-Regardless if it doesn’t seem like what you are doing much; it is something. Regardless of what negative thoughts cross your mind or what may be said.
- Think outside of yourself-Doing this lets you focus on others, to do good for the greater good, and not being left to dwell in self thoughts and pity.
