Vanessa made crafts and sold them to raise money for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. She and a friend brainstormed on crafts to make, and they decided to make candles and dream catchers.
When making the candles she bought plain candles in glass jars and decorated the glass with glitter, ribbons, and pretty stickers. It was a simple enough concept, and had wonderful results.
She used social media, such as Facebook, to spread the word about her crafts and the cause she was selling them for. This helped to make more people aware of what was going on, and it also helped Vanessa to sell more candles.
In the end, Vanessa raised $200 for NAMI. She didn’t feel like she’d done enough, so she also decided she would gather as many scarves as possible, attach little notes to them, and tie them around trees downtown for the homeless.
She made another Facebook post asking for people to donate scarves, telling them why and what her plan was.
People contacted her and donated any scarves they had, and she and a friend wrote down notes to brighten people’s day, tying them to the scarves. Then they went to downtown Minneapolis and tied the scarves around trees.
